So what is living in Harlow like?

Let's find out: Living in Harlow: A practical guide, with a family focus Living in Harlow feels different from living in many other commuter towns because it was planned with space in mind.

The town is known for its broad green areas, neighbourhood layout, public sculpture, and a town centre that serves not just Harlow itself but a wider catchment across west Essex and the Hertfordshire border.

For families, that matters.

Harlow is the sort of place where everyday life can be built around practical amenities rather than occasional treats: Parks after school, libraries, swimming, theatre trips, cafés, museum visits, sports facilities and easy drives or rail trips to farm parks, forests and historic market towns nearby.

It is not a picture-postcard market town in the classic sense; it is more functional, more spread out, and more rooted in post-war planning.

But for many households that translates into convenience, breathing room and plenty to do with children. The major amenities in Harlow Here are the main amenities that shape day-to-day life in Harlow.

Shopping, eating and town-centre services Harlow Town Centre is the commercial hub, with its two main shopping centres, The Harvey Centre and The Water Gardens, plus additional shops, dining and services around the centre.

Together they make the town centre the main shopping, dining and leisure area for local residents. Parks and green space This is one of Harlow's strongest selling points.

The town has a substantial network of green spaces, especially Harlow Town Park, alongside the sculpture trail, Harlow Museum & Walled Gardens, The Gibberd Garden and Parndon Mill.

Town Park is one of the local highlights, with its adventure playground, inclusive play area, paddling pool, skate park, café and Pets' Corner.

Arts, culture and entertainment Harlow Playhouse is one of the town's big assets.

It hosts theatre, comedy, dance, music and family events, and gives the town a cultural offer that goes beyond the standard shopping-and-cinema mix.

The Gibberd Gallery adds another layer, linking to Harlow's reputation for public sculpture and visual art. Sport and leisure Harlow has a strong sports and leisure offer for a town of its size.

Harlow Leisurezone is a major draw, with swimming pools and indoor sports facilities that are well used by families, fitness users and local clubs.

Healthcare The town's main acute hospital is The Princess Alexandra Hospital.

For many families, having a major nhs hospital in town is a significant practical advantage and an important part of everyday peace of mind.

Education, libraries and family support Harlow has established schools, further-education provision and community services that support family life.

Libraries, local activities and family support services all add to the sense that Harlow is built around day-to-day practicality rather than just weekend appeal.

Transport Transport is another major plus.

Harlow Town and Harlow Mill stations give the town direct rail access on the London-Cambridge corridor, making commuting and regional travel relatively straightforward.

Bus links also make it easy to move around the town and connect to neighbouring areas.

What family life in Harlow is actually like For families with younger children, the biggest draw is how much is available without needing to turn every weekend into a major expedition.

Town Park is the obvious anchor: It combines open space with play provision, a paddling pool, café stops and Pets' Corner. That is the kind of place families use repeatedly rather than just once.

Harlow Museum & Walled Gardens adds another useful layer to everyday life.

It works well as both an easy weekend outing and a place where school-age children can engage with local history, gardens and seasonal events.

For wet-weather days, Harlow is better placed than many nearby towns.

The combination of Leisurezone, the cinema, shopping centres, libraries and Harlow Playhouse means families are not entirely dependent on good weather.

The Playhouse is especially valuable because it gives the town something more varied and cultural than a standard retail trip.

Older children and teenagers also benefit from Harlow's mix of informal and structured options: Skate facilities, swimming, sport, arts participation, public spaces and youth-oriented creative activities.

It is not a town that relies on one headline attraction; it works better as a place with many repeatable, affordable options.

Best things for families to do in Harlow A good family week or weekend in Harlow can easily include: Harlow Town Park for playgrounds, gardens, paddling pool, skate park and café Pets' Corner for a free animal visit Harlow Museum & Walled Gardens for history, gardens and seasonal activities Harlow Playhouse for family shows and events The Gibberd Gallery and the sculpture trail for art and outdoor wandering Leisurezone for swimming and indoor sport Libraries for story sessions, crafts and community events Parndon Mill and other arts spaces for a quieter, creative change of pace Family days out in the surrounding towns and villages One of Harlow's real advantages is what sits around it.

You are not limited to the town itself. Bishop's Stortford Bishop's Stortford is one of the most useful nearby family add-ons.

It offers attractions such as South Mill Arts, Bishop's Stortford Museum, Castle Park, town trails, Cammas Hall Farm and Audley End Miniature Railway.

The town also has a splash park, making it a strong option for a family day out.

In practical terms, Bishop's Stortford works well for a mixed-age family trip: Outdoor play, a museum or arts stop, lunch in town, then home.

It is close enough to feel like an extension of Harlow's own family offer rather than a major journey.

Hatfield Broad Oak and the rural edge near Bishop's Stortford For families who like farm-style outings, Cammas Hall Farm is one of the standout nearby attractions.

These kinds of destinations are especially useful in autumn, spring and school holidays when families want something seasonal and outdoorsy.

Sawbridgeworth and nearby countryside Sawbridgeworth is smaller and quieter, so it is less about major attractions and more about the appeal of a pleasant small-town setting with access to clubs, community life and nearby green spaces.

Its value for Harlow families is partly as a gentler neighbouring place to visit, and partly as a gateway to the Hertfordshire countryside.

Perry Green and East Hertfordshire A particularly strong nearby outing is Henry Moore Studios & Gardens at Perry Green.

It offers a family-friendly day out where children can enjoy open space while adults appreciate the art, landscape and exhibitions.

Hertford and the wider East Herts area If you want a more traditional county-town outing, Hertford adds shops, eateries, attractions and events.

More broadly, East Hertfordshire offers historic towns, countryside and family attractions, giving Harlow families a wider choice of market-town days, parks and outdoor trips.

Epping Forest district, including Epping, Ongar, Waltham Abbey and Theydon Bois To the south and south-east, the Epping Forest district is one of Harlow's biggest lifestyle bonuses.

It offers forest walks, nature reserves and family attractions including Epping Ongar Railway, Lee Valley Park Farms, Redwings Ada Cole Horse Sanctuary, museums and historic towns such as Waltham Abbey and Ongar.

For family life, this matters because it gives Harlow a second personality.

Daily living may be suburban and practical, but weekends can quickly become woodland walks, railway rides, farm visits and heritage outings.

Roydon Roydon is a good example of the smaller villages around Harlow that work well for low-key family outings rather than all-day attractions.

It also sits within easy reach of countryside walks and family destinations such as Lee Valley Animal Adventure Park and the National Speedway Museum at Paradise Wildlife Park near Broxbourne.

So, what is it really like to live in Harlow? Harlow is best understood as a town of convenience, green space and family practicality.

It has enough of its own infrastructure to support everyday life well: Shopping, rail links, hospital provision, sport, theatre, museums, libraries and major parks.

It also sits in a very useful position between Essex and Hertfordshire, so families can quickly expand their options with trips to Bishop's Stortford, East Herts, Epping Forest and the surrounding villages.
