Description This exquisite and important early Georgian family home was built circa 1721-1723 by Captain John Gray, who was responsible for the construction of the original 24 houses of Montpelier Row and a further 10 houses in Sion Row.

Fotheringay House is located in the middle of Montpelier Row, one of the finest examples of a Georgian street in greater London.

It is a landmark property and an architectural masterpiece of the utmost period integrity, granted a Grade II* listing.

Discretely set behind wrought iron gates and brick pillars the house has a striking façade.

With a rusticated doorway with stucco cherubs head ornament attached to the keystone and featuring beautifully regimented fenestration with distinctive soldier coursing, the house strikes a distinguished tone.

To the front the house benefits from far-reaching views over Marble Hill Park, with tree-lined gardens to the rear providing a wonderfully green outlook further enhancing the separation you feel from the busy streets of London, only 9 miles distant to Hyde Park Corner.

These open aspects with noticeably generous windows allow an excellent flow of natural light and the accommodation is practically yet flexibly configured over four floors, providing superbly for both formal entertaining and everyday family life.

As grand as it is, the house maintains a homely and magical atmosphere and further features of particular note include an exceptional galleried reception hall with the original detailed pine staircase, gorgeous fireplaces, operational box window shutters, elegant panelled rooms and tall corniced ceilings.

The house is currently arranged to provide flexible bedroom accommodation, including a wonderfully bright principal bedroom, but with further flexibility to use reception rooms as additional bedrooms as required.

These rooms are served by no less than 3 beautifully appointed bathrooms and a further 3 lavatories.

On the ground floor, the panelled dining room is served by a concealed dumb waiter from the kitchen below. There is a stunning drawing room as well as a study.

The lower ground floor is configured to accommodate the generous kitchen with breakfast seating, a bedroom and bathroom, as well as a large boot room and separate utility area.

To the front there is a large vault, perfect for wine storage or other daily requirements. The house is set within stunning walled gardens that are well established and provide excellent privacy.

The private parking located opposite the entrance to the house is large enough to accommodate at least three or four cars.

Fotheringay House was once home to Sir Archibald Sinclair; the 1st Viscount Thurso. A British Liberal Politician and Secretary of State for Air during wwii.

He was visited at the house by none other than Sir Winston Churchill for lunch in the beautiful panelled dining room, as well as more pressing matters on other occasions.

Montpelier Row was also home to many other well known historic characters; such as John Stuart, the 3rd Earl of Bute - a Scottish Statesman and Tory Politician who served as British Prime Minister from 26th May 1762 to 8th April 1763.

As well as once being home to the legendary poet, Walter de la Mare and also the Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Location The house occupies an enviable position overlooking the stunning open acres of Marble Hill park, that in turn adjoins a particularly scenic stretch of the River Thames with a regular foot ferry across to Ham and Ham House - providing a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
