Law Castle, North Ayrshire, KA23 9PB

A Magnificent 15th Century Castle Restored to Immaculate Standards Description Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Ayrshire coast, Law Castle is a rare and remarkable example of a fully restored medieval tower house, steeped in royal history and architectural significance.

Commissioned in 1467 as a wedding gift for Princess Mary Stuart, daughter of King James II of Scotland who for historical context was a direct descendant of Robert The Bruce.

The castle was built to mark her marriage to Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran. However, the union was short-lived - Boyd was accused of treason and exiled, and the marriage was annulled.

The castle then became a law court complete with pit prison, hence the name Law Castle.

Princess Mary "The Warrior Princess" was a historically significant person being responsible for Scotland gaining ownership of the Orkney and Shetland islands.

She is the subject of much literary note, Nigel Tranter having featured her incredible story in an omnibus of work with (it is believed) Law Castle featuring on the front cover.

Princess Mary remarried the "new" Earl of Arran, James Hamilton and the Hamilton line retain to the title to this day.

Despite its turbulent beginnings, Law Castle remained a prominent landmark for centuries before falling into disrepair in the 19th century.

By the early 20th century, the structure was roofless and largely abandoned, a silent witness to Scotland’s turbulent past.

Its fortunes changed in the late 20th century when a private restoration project began, culminating in a meticulous and sympathetic refurbishment completed in 2005.

Today, Law Castle stands as a testament to Scotland’s architectural resilience and royal heritage, it positively reeks of the romance, pride and passion of Scotland’s history.

The restoration has preserved its authentic period features - including the spiral stone staircase, vaulted chambers, and caphouse lookout - while seamlessly integrating modern comforts.

The result is a residence of exceptional character, historical gravitas and, if you imagine The Bruce, Knights Templar and full on Da Vinci Code you will not be far wrong!

This is an extremely rare opportunity to own, "feel" and be a part of an incredibly authentic piece of Scotland’s noble past.

Accommodation Law Castle is a striking fusion of medieval architecture and modern comfort.

Spanning six floors and over 3,000 square feet, the accommodation is as dramatic as it is versatile, offering a rare opportunity to live within a historic landmark.

The ground floor of Law Castle offers a theatrical and character-rich introduction to life within its historic walls, the entrance hall leads to the library bedroom with ensuite bathroom and the dungeon dining room with rear staircase accessing the Great Hall.

At the heart of the home on the first floor lies the Great Hall - a breathtaking space that captures the essence of the castle.

With its rugged stone walls, exposed timber beams, and soaring proportions, the hall evokes centuries of history while remaining warm and inviting.

A vast stone fireplace, fitted with a wood-burning stove and flanked by tall candle sconces, anchors the room with a sense of permanence.

Above, candelabra chandeliers casts a soft glow, illuminating the rich textures of tapestries and banners that adorn the walls.

Red velvet curtains frame the windows, adding a regal touch, while the seating area - arranged around the imposing leather riveted coffee table - invites conversation and relaxation.

It’s an extremely peaceful room that feels both ceremonial and lived-in, perfect for hosting grand dinners or enjoying quiet evenings by the fire.

Just off the Great Hall, the kitchen continues the castle’s theme of rustic elegance.

Set beneath a stone arch, a cast iron aga sits proudly at the centre, surrounded by wooden cabinetry and open shelving that display an array of pots, pans, and utensils.

The stone-tiled floor and rough-hewn walls give the space an old-world charm, while modern touches blend seamlessly into the traditional aesthetic.

A wooden table and chairs made from timbers from a cathedral provide a grand, authentic spot for meals, making this kitchen both functional and full of character.

As the castle unfolds across its upper levels, each floor reveals its own distinct personality with six beautifully appointed bedrooms.

Bedroom one otherwise known as the princess bedroom, located on the second floor, is a particularly enchanting space.

Elevated on a wooden platform, a four-poster bed draped in soft curtains takes centre stage, creating a sense of romance and retreat.

The room is framed by warm wooden floors and ceilings, with a window seat nestled beneath dark curtains offering a quiet nook for reading or reflection.

A bedside table and lamp add to the room’s gentle ambiance, making it a serene haven within the castle’s towering walls. A Jack and Jill en-suite services both bedrooms.

The third floor features two well-proportioned bedrooms and a well-appointed bathroom complimented by a clawfoot rolltop bath tub.

The fourth floor is accessed directly from the turnpike stone staircase and is home to the versatile principal suite with long, elegant bedroom, lounge/bedroom six, study and en-suite bathroom, again with a clawfoot rolltop bath.

At the top, the fifth floor reveals a vast attic space - ideal for storage, creative pursuits, or further development subject to consents.

Crowning Law Castle is a striking roofline that exemplifies medieval grandeur.

The parapet is lined with traditional crenellations, evoking the fortified elegance of a 15th-century Scottish tower house and can be fully walked around, indeed this was the domain of the guarding archers.

At each corner, conical turrets rise gracefully, adding architectural drama and historic charm.

The roof is further enhanced by decorative stonework, which accentuates the castle’s timeless character and contributes to its commanding silhouette against the surrounding greenery.

In summary, this is no "Disney" castle, this is the real deal.
