Back Lane, Bradford, BD15 9AB

This house was once the Duke of York public house. Today it is a Grade II listed, three-bedroom stone mid-terrace on the edge of Allerton.

It comes with no onward chain, off-road parking for two to three cars and a view across open fields that stops people in their tracks.

At £190,000, it is a rare chance to own a piece of local history with the space to match: 104 sq m across two floors, plus a cellar. I will be straight with you.

It would benefit from some updating, and the front yard needs a tidy, but this is not a project that calls for extensive works. The rooms are generous and the character is already here.

With a little vision, it could become a truly special home. You arrive onto a tarmac forecourt marked out for parking, with the old pub's stone frontage, chimneys and stone slate roof in front of you.

A gabled, timber-clad porch with a half-glazed door makes a practical entrance.

It also houses the boiler and central heating system, so coats, boots and the workings of the house are kept out of the living space.

To one side is the living room, and it is a big one: 5.6 m by 5.0 m on the floor plan.

Glazed patio doors set into a projecting bay and a second window fill it with light, and on a sunny day long bars of sunshine fall across the grey carpet.

It is finished in neutral décor with warm pine skirtings, architraves and a panelled timber door, so you can move in and make it your own at your own pace.

There is room for a generous sofa arrangement facing the doors, and on a summer evening those doors open straight out to the front. On the other side is the dining kitchen, the hub of the house.

The kitchen runs 5.5 m by 2.9 m with a dining area of 4.6 m by 2.0 m alongside, all open plan under recessed spotlights on wood-effect flooring.

Shaker-style wood units wrap around in an L-shape beneath granite worktops, finishing in a curved breakfast bar that is perfect for a morning coffee while someone else cooks.

A stainless steel range cooker sits beneath a chimney hood and steel splashback, and the sink sits under a wide, deep-set window.

The dining area has room for a proper family table, a bold blue feature wall and a ledged-and-braced cottage door.

A door from the kitchen leads down to the cellar, 2.1 m by 3.5 m, ideal for storage, and the main staircase rises from here with a timber handrail.

Every window in this house faces the same way, and upstairs that is where it really pays off. A landing with panelled pine doors leads to every room.

The main bedroom, 3.3 m by 4.6 m, has a wide double window looking out over fields and towards the hills, a sloping ceiling line that adds character and loft access for extra storage.

It is the kind of room where you leave the blinds open just to see the view first thing. Bedroom two, 3.4 m by 3.5 m, is another good-sized room with a front-facing window and neutral décor.

Bedroom three, 2.0 m by 4.6 m, has exposed timber beams that hint at the building's past and a window framing a slice of countryside. It would make a lovely single bedroom, nursery or home office.

The bathroom is finished in large marble-effect tiles with a wood-effect tiled floor.

There is a shower bath with a glass screen and a shower over, a wide basin set into a wood-effect vanity unit with drawers, a mirrored wall cabinet above and a WC, with a frosted window for privacy.

Outside, the front yard is laid to tarmac with marked bays, giving off-road parking for two to three cars. That is a real bonus for a period home.

Step out of the door and the open views across the fields are right there. So who will love it? First-time buyers looking for genuine space and character at £190,000, with no chain to wait on.

Couples and young families who want three bedrooms, parking and countryside on the doorstep without losing touch with the city.

And anyone who has always wanted a home with a story to tell: This is the old Duke of York, after all.

As it is Grade II listed, alterations will need listed building consent, which is worth bearing in mind as you plan your updates.

Back Lane sits on the rural edge of Allerton in BD15, with open fields on the doorstep. For families there is a good choice of schools.

Wilsden Primary School and Sandy Lane Primary School are both 1.1 miles away, and Thornton Primary School is 1.3 miles.

For secondary age there is Beckfoot Thornton at 1.8 miles, with Belle Vue Girls' Academy and Dixons Allerton Academy both 1.9 miles away.

By car, Bradford city centre is about 13 minutes away (4.9 miles) and Halifax town centre about 16 minutes (7.2 miles).

Leeds city centre is around 34 minutes (18.9 miles), and the M62 at junction 26, Chain Bar, is around 24 minutes (10.5 miles). The flood risk here is very low.

The essentials: Freehold, Council Tax band D, EPC rating D with the potential to reach B, and no onward chain. Homes with this much history do not come up often.
