The Burgher Kirk, 136, South Street, Fife, KY16 9EQ

Unique historic cottage tucked away in a quiet close, right in the centre of St Andrews Description The Burgher Kirk has an interesting history and dates back to the early 1700s when it was built as a barn and stable.

In the mid 1700s the building was used as a church by the Burgher Kirk congregation before a larger premises was found in 1774.

In the 1950s the St Andrews Preservation Trust converted the property into a residential dwelling which combines period character and a contemporary interior finish, situated in a prime position in central St Andrews.

The exterior of the house features original stone walls with an ochre limewash, and a pantile roof with a crow stepped gable on the southern elevation.

There is plenty of natural light which enters the house through the sash and case windows placed at different heights on both the north and south elevations.

The property features a private, south-facing cobbled courtyard, ideal for relaxing or entertaining.

As you enter The Burgher Kirk, a small entrance hallway leads to the sitting room and shower room, with a staircase directly ahead.

The sitting room is bright and airy, enhanced by a skylight, six windows on the west and east elevations and an impressive double-height ceiling.

The space is centred around a tiled fireplace on the gable wall with steps leading down to the contemporary kitchen/diner featuring integrated appliances including a dishwasher, fridge with freezer, and electric induction hob.

Adjacent to the kitchen is an under stairs store and pantry, complete with shelving and plumbing for a washing machine.

The modern shower room is fitted with a walk-in shower, WC, and wash basin with vanity unit.

On the first floor is a tranquil bedroom, offering ample space for a double bed and featuring built-in storage, dual-aspect windows and a roof light that fills the room with natural light.

Off the bedroom and accessed via a step ladder is the attic space, which could potentially be altered to create additional accommodation, subject to building regulations and council approvals.

Outside, a charming and secluded cobbled terrace provides ample space for a table and chairs, alongside a raised decking area perfectly positioned to soak up the afternoon sun.

A path loops around the rear of The Burgher Kirk to Alison’s Close, which also leads out to South Street. Location The Burgher Kirk sits just off South Street in the heart of St Andrews.
