About
In the centre of Tring, opposite the parish church of St Peter & St Paul and within the Conservation Area, stands one of the town’s most distinctive Edwardian buildings.
Built in 1905 as a coaching inn, it was designed by William Huckvale, architect to Lord Rothschild.
Its steeply pitched roofs, tall brick chimneys and exuberant black-and-white timberwork are a confident expression of his romantic interpretation of the English vernacular.
Behind this elaborate frontage, this first-floor apartment occupies part of the original building, with tall leaded windows framing views across the churchyard and the historic heart of the town.
The original building was converted in 2014, its historic structure incorporated into a collection of apartments reserved for those aged 55 and over.
New buildings were introduced around the landscaped courtyard behind, while Huckvale’s original frontage was retained, preserving the architectural character that has made it such a recognisable part of Tring’s High Street for more than a century.
Entry is through a communal hallway, where the original staircase continues to rise through the building.
A lift was introduced as part of the conversion, providing access to the first floor, while an entryphone system controls access from outside.
Within the apartment, a generous L-shaped hallway provides a sense of separation between the living spaces at the front and the bedrooms behind.
Glazed double doors open into a sitting room and dining room, arranged as adjoining spaces rather than one continuous room.
The sitting room is dominated by a magnificent bay window, some 12ft across, its dark timber framework dividing the outlook into a series of distinct views.
Beyond the glass, the tower of St Peter & St Paul rises above the trees, its clock face visible between the leaded panes.
The original iron window catches remain in place, their decorative forms a small but telling reminder of the craftsmanship invested in the building.
A fireplace sits in the corner, while a wide opening connects the sitting room with the dining area beyond.
Here, glazed double doors lead onto a private balcony, bringing a little outside space into an otherwise distinctly urban setting. An archway connects the dining room with the kitchen.
Off-white Shaker cabinetry is arranged beneath granite worktops, with an integrated oven, hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.
Its simple, traditional detailing sits comfortably alongside the more decorative architecture of the original building. The bedrooms occupy the rear of the apartment.
Both have built-in wardrobes, while the main bedroom has an en suite bathroom. A separate shower room is positioned off the hallway, serving the second bedroom and guests.
At ground level, the buildings are arranged around a landscaped courtyard.
Clipped hedging, small trees and established planting soften the brickwork, while pathways lead through the development to the residents’ parking area behind.
An allocated parking space belongs to the apartment. Additionally, an attractive communal garden is available for use by residents. There is a particular pleasure in living at the centre of town.
From here, Tring’s independent shops, coffee shops, restaurants and everyday amenities are all quite literally on your doorstep.
The church and war memorial stand immediately opposite, while the High Street unfolds in either direction. More than a century has passed since the building first opened its doors to travellers.
The horses and carriages have long since departed, yet much of what made the building remarkable in 1905 remains: the bold silhouette of its gables, the dark geometry of its timberwork, the intricate ironmongery and, perhaps most memorably, the view of the church through those wonderful leaded windows.
It is a place where the past is not simply part of the setting, but visible in the fabric of the rooms themselves.
The apartment is offered for sale with no upper chain and benefits from a 999 year lease dating from 2014. TENURE: Leasehold (999 years from 1 January 2014). Ground rent: £350.00 per annum.
