Ardchoille, Helensburgh, G84 0QN

A remarkable William Leiper masterpiece in a truly commanding setting Description Set within spacious, mature gardens on the Rosneath Peninsula, Ardchoille is an appealing example of early 20th century Scottish domestic architecture.

Designed in 1901 by William Leiper, a leading figure of the Arts & Crafts movement, the property is recognised as a Category B Listed Building for its architectural interest.

Its gently gabled elevations, bay windows and tiled rooflines sit comfortably within the surrounding landscape, giving the house a well established and welcoming presence.

A long private driveway guides you towards the front of the house, gradually revealing the combination of stonework, timber detailing and mature planting that characterises the setting.

The grounds are broad and peaceful, with lawns stretching out from the house and trees framing the views. Inside, the reception hall creates an immediate sense of warmth and character.

Timber panelling, a carved stone fireplace and a well crafted staircase show the level of care that went into the original design. From here, the main reception rooms are arranged with a natural flow.

The drawing room is generously proportioned, with a large bay window drawing in garden views and a fireplace forming an elegant focal point.

Adjacent to this, the sitting room faces the garden and enjoys another wide bay, making it a bright and comfortable space for everyday living.

Completing the trio of reception rooms, the snug offers a more intimate setting, ideal for relaxing, reading or enjoying quieter moments.

The dining room, lighter in tone, sits close by and is perfectly suited to both informal family meals and more formal entertaining and benefits from direct access to the kitchen and French doors out to the garden.

The kitchen and breakfast room form a practical and inviting part of the house.

Traditional cabinetry, an aga and direct access to the garden make this a functional and enjoyable space for daily life, complemented by useful ancillary areas and storage.

The first floor offers bright, well shaped rooms that make full use of the home’s bay windows.

The principal bedroom is especially appealing, with a wide outlook over the gardens, a fireplace and an adjoining dressing room fitted with useful storage.

The remaining bedrooms each have their own character, some with timber detailing or period fireplaces and the study provides a quiet corner for work.

Bathrooms on this level combine traditional features, such as a roll top bath, with modern practicality.

The top floor adds further flexibility, offering two large rooms that can serve a variety of purposes from a playroom to a studio or additional accommodation while remaining nicely separate from the main living areas.

Positioned right on the water, the setting of the house plays a defining role in its overall atmosphere.

The grounds surrounding the property enhance this wonderfully, with sweeping lawns and mature trees framing uninterrupted views across the water.

The sense of openness around the house creates a calm and private environment, allowing the natural landscape to become part of everyday living.

It’s a setting that feels tranquil yet uplifting, a rare combination that elevates the experience of the home.

Altogether, Ardchoille is a well designed and sensitively preserved Arts & Crafts home.

It combines thoughtful original detailing with comfortable family spaces and a beautiful garden setting, offering a blend of history, practicality and quiet charm.
