A Home With History - Originally known as Tillyoldfield, Greno House occupies a site rich in local history dating back more than two centuries.

The original Georgian house was built in 1786 for Joseph Fawley, a prosperous local tanner, using locally quarried stone.

Its elegant proportions and prominent setting reflected the wealth and status of its first owner.

In 1820, the property was acquired by John Rider, Headteacher of Whitley Hall School, for his son George Rider.

During this period, the house operated as a respected School for Young Gentlemen, welcoming both boarding and day pupils.

Following George Rider’s death, Greno House became a distinguished private residence and, from around 1880 to 1928, was home to a succession of affluent families.

The estate was enhanced with leisure facilities including a tennis court and bowling green, while the grounds also featured a coach house, stable block and access to what is now known as the Reading Room.

In 1928, the property was purchased by a local builder who, in 1931, carefully converted the house into five individual family homes.

This transformation marked the beginning of its next chapter while preserving much of the character and charm of the original Georgian residence.

Today, Greno House offers a rare opportunity to own a home within a building of significant local heritage, combining period character, architectural interest and a fascinating history that spans over 230 years.

It has truly been a privilege to call this house our home for almost three decades. We raised our children, celebrated milestones and built countless memories here surrounded by warmth and history.

Now that our children are grown up, the house has become far too large for just the two of us.

It is time for another family to make it their own and we hope the next owners will find as much joy and comfort here as we have.
