5, Welmar Mews, Clapham, SW4 7DD

Within secure gates in one of Clapham Old Town’s most desirable and characterful mews, this exceptional three-bedroom residence presents a rare opportunity to rent a home that seamlessly blends industrial heritage, contemporary architecture and refined modern living.

Quiet, design-led and beautifully considered throughout, the house offers a sense of privacy and calm that feels far removed from the city, while remaining moments from the energy and vibrancy that defines this part of South West London.

Welmar Mews holds a unique place in Clapham’s architectural narrative.

Formerly home to Welmar Pianos, one of Britain’s most respected piano manufacturers, the original factory was carefully reimagined in the late 1990s into a private collection of bespoke mews houses.

Many of the building’s original industrial features were thoughtfully retained during the conversion, allowing the history of the site to inform the architecture rather than compete with it.

The result is a development with genuine soul, distinctive, understated and entirely unlike conventional residential schemes.

Arranged over three well-planned floors, the house offers flexibility, privacy and impressive volume throughout.

Entry is via the mews itself, where the atmosphere is peaceful and neighbourly, creating a true sense of retreat despite the central location.

The ground floor is home to two generous double bedrooms, both beautifully proportioned and finished with a calm, contemporary palette.

Each bedroom benefits from a sleek, modern en-suite bathroom, one offering a Jack & Jill entry to both rooms, making this level ideal for professional sharers, visiting guests or family living.

The principal bedroom is defined with a view toward the entrance courtyard and dressing area, and the second bedroom has an extensive vaulted ceiling to the top floor and built-in wardrobes.

Ascending to the upper levels, the house opens into its most striking and impressive space.

A superb open-plan kitchen, dining and reception room is crowned by a dramatic vaulted ceiling, creating a wonderful sense of height and light rarely found in mews properties.

Natural light pours in, accentuating the architectural lines and iron roof structure, enhancing the feeling of openness, while the layout provides clearly defined zones for cooking, dining and relaxing without compromising flow.

The kitchen is both elegant and practical, designed for modern living and entertaining in equal measure.

Whether hosting friends for dinner, enjoying a quiet evening at home, or working from within the generous living space, this floor adapts effortlessly to daily life.

From the living area, doors lead directly onto a private roof terrace. A calm, elevated outdoor space that feels wonderfully secluded.

Perfect for alfresco dining, morning coffee or evening drinks, the terrace extends the living space outdoors and offers a rare sense of privacy in such a central Clapham location.

A third bedroom, positioned on a discreet mezzanine level above the kitchen, adds another layer of flexibility.

This adaptable space works beautifully as a guest bedroom, home office, creative studio or reading retreat, offering separation from the main sleeping accommodation while remaining visually connected to the heart of the home.

The space included discreet hidden storage.

The property is offered furnished, allowing for a smooth and turnkey move, and further benefits from private off-street parking for one vehicle, a valuable asset in this part of London.

The home beyond the gates, the lifestyle appeal of Clapham Old Town unfolds immediately.

At its centre is Venn Street, home to the much-loved Venn Street Market, where weekends begin with artisan bread, fresh produce and excellent coffee.

Long lunches are best enjoyed at local favourites such as Trinity, The Lavender or WC Wine & Charcuterie, while evenings might lead you to The Sun, The Bobbin or No.32 Old Town, all firmly established as neighbourhood institutions.

Just moments away lies Common, one of London’s most celebrated and expansive green spaces, spanning over 220 acres of open parkland.

A defining feature of daily life in this area, the Common offers an exceptional balance of nature, recreation and community right on your doorstep.

The Common is impressively well equipped, providing access to tennis courts, football pitches, cricket nets and outdoor fitness areas, as well as three ornamental ponds that become a particular draw during the warmer months.

Wide, tree-lined paths make it ideal for morning runs, dog walks and evening strolls, while open lawns offer space for picnics, relaxation and informal gatherings throughout the year.

Families and professionals alike benefit from the Common’s playgrounds, cafés and regular community events, which range from outdoor fitness classes and yoga sessions to seasonal festivals and open-air performances.

In the summer months, Clapham Common becomes a vibrant social hub, perfect for spontaneous meet-ups, long afternoons outdoors and a true sense of neighbourhood connection.

Excellent transport links further enhance the appeal of the location, with Clapham Common and Clapham North Underground stations close by, providing swift access into the City, the West End and beyond via the Northern Line.
