3 quirky facts about newport 1. A Royal King and His Famous Companion May Have Stayed in the Village: Newport has a fascinating royal connection.

According to local history, King Charles II passed through the village on his way to Newmarket, and his famous companion Nell Gwynn may have stayed at Crown House on Bridge End.

The connection to Nell Gwynn is a local historical tradition rather than a confirmed fact, but it certainly adds a little intrigue to the village's past. 2.

Newport Once Had a Thriving Market: Although Newport is now a peaceful Essex village, it was once a flourishing market settlement.

Its name is thought to derive from Old English elements meaning something along the lines of "new market" or "new town".

The village's history therefore stretches well beyond its present day role as a sought after residential location. 3.

The Railway Brought More Than Commuters to Newport: When the railway arrived in 1845, it helped transform the village.

Alongside making travel easier, the new railway connection encouraged businesses to establish themselves locally, including a gas works and maltings.

The station also has an unusual architectural feature: Its Victorian waiting rooms retain distinctive cast iron fireplace surrounds designed by Thomas Jeckyll and made in Norwich.

Even today, Newport's railway heritage remains part of its identity. ------------------ Agent Disclaimer: These particulars are intended as a guide only and do not form part of any offer or contract.
