Peth Bank, Lanchester, DH7 0NG

Peth Cottage, Lanchester A once in a generation opportunity to own a truly extraordinary piece of English history.

Believed to be the oldest surviving home in Lanchester, Peth Cottage dates back to the thirteenth century and stands proudly as a remarkable example of medieval craftsmanship.

Built from local sandstone and crowned with a traditional clay tiled roof, this exceptional cottage blends almost eight centuries of character with thoughtful modern refinement, creating a home that is as liveable as it is historic.

Approached via a charming Indian stone flagged courtyard with off road parking, the cottage immediately sets the tone.

Sage green timber doors, sash style double glazing, and beautifully weathered stonework provide instant kerb appeal.

A side gate leads to a generous summer house with adjoining shed and wood store, all included within the sale and perfect for hobbies, storage, or relaxed outdoor entertaining.

Step inside and the story truly unfolds.

The kitchen welcomes you with a classic cream Shaker style design, granite effect laminate worktops, brick style tiling, and integrated appliances including an induction hob and oven.

Thoughtfully laid out with three distinct work areas, the space is both practical and beautifully presented.

A cloakroom with wc sits just off the kitchen, cleverly incorporating storage for everyday essentials. Flowing seamlessly from the kitchen is the dining room, rich with history and atmosphere.

A magnificent inglenook fireplace, bespoke joinery, and stone effect tiled flooring create a warm and characterful setting for family meals and gatherings.

Oak doors lead through to the main living room, where a gentle step down reveals one of the cottage’s most captivating spaces.

Here, an aged stone inglenook with wood burning stove takes centre stage, framed by a beautiful stone mantel.

Painted barrel timber joists, iron support bars, integrated wall lighting, and a bespoke reading nook combine to create a room that feels both intimate and uplifting, full of texture, warmth, and charm.

A second porch area is packed with rare historic detail, including a carved figure believed to depict the original builder of the house.

Sandstone lintels, ancient window features, and softly curved lines reflect the organic beauty of medieval architecture and make this space a true conversation piece.

Upstairs, the character continues. The landing showcases exposed timbers, uplighting, and a sense of light and height rarely found in cottages of this age.

The principal bedroom is generously proportioned, with clever storage above the stairs and ample space for a king size bed and furniture.

The second bedroom comfortably accommodates a double bed and wardrobes, while the third bedroom, currently used as a home office, offers flexibility as a nursery, study, or occasional guest room.

The family shower room is finished in a soft, neutral palette, featuring a walk in shower with wood effect tiling, chrome fittings, wc, basin, heated towel rail, and additional storage.

Throughout the cottage, original and reclaimed timber doors, neutral tones of creams, greys, and whites, and modern radiators ensure comfort without compromising authenticity.

The property is presented in excellent condition, allowing a new owner to move straight in and simply enjoy. Peth Cottage is not just a home, it is a living piece of Lanchester’s history.

Rarely does a property of this age, quality, and condition come to market.

A truly special offering for those seeking character, heritage, and timeless appeal in the heart of this sought after village. EPC Rating: E
