Puddletown, Dorset, DT2 8SL

Behind its traditional frontage, Well Cottage reveals a home rich in character, where centuries of history sit comfortably alongside thoughtful modern updates.

Grade II Listed and believed to have served at different times as both a sweet shop and guest house, the cottage retains a wonderful collection of features that hint at its past, from original flagstone floors and timber shutters to exposed beams and old wooden doors.

The front door opens into a welcoming HALL, where original flagstones provide an immediate introduction to the character found throughout the cottage.

From here, the generous SITTING ROOM is an inviting space with warm timber flooring and a large sash window complete with original internal shutters.

A fireplace provides a natural focal point, while the scale of the room allows plenty of space to settle in with family and friends.

A particularly useful storage cupboard discreetly accommodates everyday essentials, while the room itself offers a wonderfully cosy prospect beneath the cottage's thatched roof.

Beyond, the DINING ROOM is perhaps where Well Cottage's story becomes most tangible.

Original flagstones run underfoot, while set into the floor is an extraordinary glass-covered and illuminated well, creating an unexpected glimpse into the building's past.

During earlier renovation works, a French coin dating from 1853 was discovered at the bottom of the well.

Framed and displayed within the cottage, it has since been passed between owners and remains a charming part of Well Cottage's story.

The well itself is believed to potentially pre-date the cottage and may once have provided water to the wider village.

Flowing from the DINING ROOM, the KITCHEN combines cottage character with everyday practicality.

Painted cabinetry is paired with timber work surfaces, while an exposed beam overhead adds warmth and texture.

There is a BEKO™ double oven electric cooker with ceramic hob, alongside space for a fridge freezer, washing machine and standard-sized dishwasher.

Underfloor heating adds further comfort, while a new Glow-worm™ combination boiler was installed in October 2025.

The staircase rises through a characterful split-level landing, where recessed shelving, exposed timber and cottage doors continue the sense of history.

The bathroom sits on the first level and features another original shuttered window alongside a distinctive sunken bath with shower over.

A few steps higher, the PRINCIPAL BEDROOM is an unexpected delight.

Exceptionally generous for a cottage of this style, it provides room not only for a large bed but also a comfortable seating area, while extensive built-in wardrobes provide excellent storage.

A sash window draws in plenty of natural light and looks across towards the village church, creating a particularly lovely outlook to wake up to.

Completing the accommodation is BEDROOM TWO, a charming double bedroom where exposed timbers beneath the roofline give an immediate reminder of the age and character of the cottage.

Throughout, the combination of old flagstones, timberwork, shutters and gently irregular lines gives Well Cottage an authenticity that cannot be recreated.

A home whose history remains very much part of everyday life.

Outside To the rear of Well Cottage lies a private courtyard garden, creating a peaceful little outdoor retreat that is wonderfully easy to look after.

Paved beneath foot and enclosed by timber gates, there is ample room for a table and chairs, making it an inviting spot for morning coffee, a quiet afternoon with a book or al-fresco dining outside on warmer evenings.

Its low-maintenance nature complements the cottage particularly well, offering the enjoyment of private outside space without demanding weekends spent tending a larger garden.

Opening directly from the courtyard is a useful OUTBUILDING, providing practical storage for gardening tools, outdoor equipment or additional household appliances.

At the front, the cottage forms part of an attractive terrace of historic thatched homes overlooking The Square.

Its warm rendered façade, traditional sash windows and thatched roof create an immediately appealing first impression, with the village church just opposite adding to the wonderfully established setting.

For those drawn to village life, it is a position that feels very much at the heart of Puddletown, with the history and character of the surroundings beginning quite literally at the front door.
