Castle Combe, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 7HX

Preedy Cottage is a beautifully preserved Grade II listed stone house tucked away within the historic village of Castle Combe, widely regarded as one of the Cotswold’s prettiest settings.

Dating back in parts to the 16th century, the detached home evolved gradually over several centuries, resulting in a property rich in character and architectural interest.

‘The front section dates to the 1500s, while the staircase and sitting room were added around 300 years ago.

The rear part came later in the 19th century, so the house has grown very naturally over time.’ They add, ‘It is believed the cottage was built for Preedy, who was a retainer to the lord of the manor.’ Purchased in 2019, the cottage quickly became a much-loved escape from London life.

‘I had my marriage blessing at the Manor House many years earlier and always remembered how magical Castle Combe felt,’ says the owner.

‘When I later saw the cottage for sale, I instantly fell in love with it – it has such a warm and peaceful atmosphere and feels like a real retreat away from the world.

What’s more, Castle Combe has a welcoming sense of community.’ Arranged over two floors, the accommodation combines period charm with comfortable modern living.

There are five bedrooms, including two en suites, along with a separate wet room featuring a large rainfall shower.

The kitchen, complete with Aga, forms the heart of the home during the winter months, while the garden and walled swimming pool create an idyllic setting in summer.

‘The cottage stays wonderfully cool in summer and cosy in winter,’ the owner explains.

Outside, the house sits within around half an acre of private gardens bordered by mature trees, adding to the sense of seclusion.

Despite its peaceful position, the property is remarkably well connected, with Bath & Bristol nearby, excellent motorway access and fast rail links from Chippenham to London Paddington.

Planning permission has also been granted to replace the two garages with an 800 sq ft annex.

‘It’s a true chocolate-box cottage in one of the country’s most beautiful villages.’ ‘Positioned on the edge of the village, the house feels incredibly private and secluded despite being in such a well-known location.’ ‘The vaulted bedroom overlooking the pool is everyone’s favourite room – all you can hear is birdsong.’ ‘It has been a genuine escape and is always an incredibly hard place to leave.

In fact, people never want to leave when they stay here.’ Additional Information: Please see Key Facts For Buyers on video link/media tab.
